SMOK Species Kit Bottom Line

The SMOK Species Kit with the new TFV8 Baby V2 tank is one of the best, correction, the best mod kit on the market right now! Super easy user interface with all the functionality you could ask for. Great flavors thanks to the redesigned coils (which aren't interchangeable with the TRV12 or Baby Beast by the way). A great amount of airflow, cooling that coil nicely. Overall a great dual 18650 230W mod kit at a great price. It's hard not to like it!

In-depth SMOK Species Kit With TFV8 Baby V2 Tank Review

The new SMOK Species kit features a new user interface driven from the 1.45” full color, responsive touchscreen. The kit comes with a newly designed tank, named the TFV8 Baby V2 tank which comes with the V2 A1 0.17-ohm mesh single coil and A2 0.2-ohm dual net coils. So how does this new setup work together, and is it now one of the best mod kits around? Let’s take a look to see!

Let’s get to it!

SMOK Species Kit Design and colors

Design

There’s nothing too striking about the Species kit, SMOK seems to be keeping things a little simple and less flamboyant than other brands right now. This really is not a bad thing as they seem to be concentrating on functionality and ergonomics with a cool subtle look.

As always, they are releasing a whole host of colors, 8 in total including black, red, gold, blue, white, green, rainbow, etc. So you should find one you like!

The mod only has one button at the front, below the 1.45” screen which acts as a function button. Below that button is the USB port for firmware updates or recharging the batteries. The side has the famous long fire button that SMOK has featured on a lot of their other models. The bottom has a latch for the spring-loaded battery door, a big improvement!

The tank comes with a bubble glass preinstalled, and a spare straight glass, holding up to up to 5ml of e-liquid.

Overall the total size of the SMOK Species Kit is actually pretty small, considering it holds dual 18650 batteries. Measuring in at 135mm tall (with the tank on), 49mm wide and a depth of 30mm.

The TFV8 Baby V2 Tank and Coil

TFV8 Baby V2 tank

The new TFV8 Baby V2 tank holds many features of its earlier versions including the nice slide top fill cap with button, gold plated 510 spring-loaded connector and the same look at feel. It holds 5ml of e-liquid, although we actually managed to get 6ml in, and it still had a bit more room for more!

The coils are newly designed for this tank and are not compatible with the other SMOK tanks like the original Baby tank. Think they should have renamed the tank to something completely different to eliminate the confusion there. You get 2 coils in the kit, one single mesh coil and the other is a dual coil, but with a sort of netting style in order to keep the resistance at a reasonable level.

I’m sure we’re going to see this tank appear on other SMOK products in the future, and we hear a new vape pen is on its way soon.

The SMOK Species Mod

The SMOK Species Mod

The mod is a 230W, powered by 2, 18650 batteries and many are saying one of the best mods that SMOK has released.

It utilizes the 5 clicks on-off functionality, but they have added a message to confirm your over 21 years old! If you select no it states “Sorry, this product is for adult use!” and switched off.

Turning it on, and confirming your age! You get a nice bright and vibrant screen displaying all the info you need like current wattage, the resistance of the coil in the tank, voltage, dual battery indicators, vaping mode (normal, hard, max and soft), puff counter and timer, and the menu button. It sounds like a lot, but it’s so well laid out it doesn’t look that bad at all.

SMOK Species Screen

You can lock the whole device, by clicking the fire button 3 times, you can turn the screen on and off by pressing the button below the screen, if you hold the button down you lock the screen only but can still fire the device.

The menu features include puff settings like limiting the number of puffs, resetting the puff counters etc. You can switch between variable wattage and temperature control (with coil type) along with the vaping mode. Also in the menu area, you can adjust the resistance of the coil, change the screen standby time, change the color of the screen. To exit the menu you can just click the fire button.

You can charge the batteries with the USB cable and it allows you to continue vaping when it’s on charge.

So all in all, a pretty well-covered menu area, although we notice the lack of the power curves that we see with other manufacturers.

The Complete SMOK Species Kit and Packaging

Performance

The V2 A1 0.17-ohm mesh single coil is a little overrated, trying it 120W is really too high, I’d suggest using it around 100-110W. At this wattage, the flavor is outstanding, really smooth and stable. The airflow does need to be taken down as fully open is way too much! Be warned though, even halfway shut the airflow is loud!

The mod is really well built, nice to hold and nice to vape on, like we see on the best e-cigarettes in it’s class. There’s really not too much to complain about here!

SMOK Species Kit Front and Back

To Conclude

A couple of bad things, first the propriety drip tip is a bit of a bummer, you can’t use your other drip tips. The coils are not compatible with the SMOK baby beast or TFV12 tanks and the airflow is really loud and turbulent.

But, the coils are a big improvement, producing some really good flavor and are super stable, lasting a lot longer than other coils. The mod itself is super user-friendly, packed with all the features you could want (except power curves)!

Overall the SMOK Species kit is, without doubt, the best mod kit they have released to date.
