Joyetech Atopack Penguin Review Bottom Line
Tremble, oh ye mortals, for the Attack Penguin has arrived! This week we had loads of fun with the new AtoPack Penguin cartridge mod by Joyetech. Because of the playful look, we nearly dismissed it as just a cool, fun gadget. As it turned out, this cheeky pod mod ‘attacks’ the performance limits of many advanced mods, and is just about the last word in convenience for lovers of Direct Lung hits and also smokers who want to experience power-vaping without the fuss.
Cartridge systems (Pod systems) are ‘closed’ vaping systems that usually can’t be refilled, but with the AtoPack Penguin, Joyetech has combined a splendid ceramic-based coil system with a massive cartridge which can be refilled, unlike the more traditional sealed pod mods.
The cheeky, streamlined Arctic Penguin inspired the design, and the result is an ergonomic irregular oval shape with seamless integration between tank and power pack to appear like a single, fused unit.
A zinc-alloy chassis protects the built-in 2,000 mAh battery, and the other main component is a PETG/silicone cartridge with a built-in drip tip. The easy-to-replace cartridge and drip-tip is the black portion, but the battery casing is available in five colors: light gray, deep red, deep blue, black, and of course, white for the classic black & white Penguin-appeal!
Despite the Penguin’s big tank, the mod is quite small and light. At 26.5mm thick and 52mm wide, it is smaller than most of the best vape mods, but is comparable to the eLeaf iKonn Total which is 28mm thick and 48.8mm wide (when measured with mini-tank) which means the Penguin is only 13mm wider than tiny-tank competitors, and weighs just 139.5g. This is quite a feat, given the powerful quick-charge battery. The built-in drip-tip takes the height to 102.5mm.
The little Penguin packs awesome battery power as it is built around a potent 2,000 mAh battery, which is so much lighter than other mods carrying 18650 batteries. We love that it charges faster than its contemporaries, and 20 to 30 minutes will add hours to your vaping time. You can also vape while plugged in and get outstanding performance immediately. Battery life is best using the 0.6Ω coil, and the Penguin performs best between full and half-charge, but overall, the battery life is excellent.
The simple fire button is very responsive, and coil heating is almost instantaneous. As there is no screen or adjustment interface for settings, JoyeTech has added five tiny LED lights just below the fire button. These light up when you vape, but as the battery life decreases the little LEDs go out one at a time. When the LEDs start blinking rapidly, you know it’s time to plug in the micro-USB charger. We have to admit it, if your a smoker looking at vaping to quit, then this system might be the product for you!
The plastic cartridge is refillable and replaceable. EU regulations limit tank size, but the AtoPack Penguin typically arrives with an eye-popping 8.8 ml cartridge. There is a writeable area on the side of the cartridge where you can jot down the particulars of your juice mix; a particularly thoughtful touch from Joyetech and a handy function for ex-smokers who are still experimenting with nicotine add-mixtures.
Unfortunately, Joyetech missed one little detail: there are no ‘portholes’ to keep tabs on the juice level in the tank. However, given the vaping performance and other benefits, this omission is absolutely not a deal breaker. You can just unclip the tank to check the juice level against the milliliter markings on the outside of the reservoir – a rarely seen benefit.
Another huge benefit is the mess-free refilling. The inner casing of the tank is lined with silicone which extends to the mouth of the fill port. This means that you can fit the e-juice dripper right into the refill port and top up the tank without any mess at all.
Joyetech’s new (Juice Vertical Injection Coil) system means superb flavor, no leaks and a shortcut to super-easy deck build. After filling the tank, remove the silicone cap, and slot in the ceramic-encased coil-head. You obtain the benefits of an advanced deck build in one smooth operation.
The Penguin’s cartridge has a large airflow slot which is sadly not adjustable. The 0.25Ω coil head is DL heaven with its lovely airy draw and warm, dense vapor. The 0.6Ω coil provides a more restrictive draw and will satisfy many, but not all MTL vapers. It’s a pity that Joyetech did not add airflow control as the lack of airflow adjustment may be a deal breaker for strictly Mouth-to-Lung vapers.
The final impression is of an aggressive little all-in-one mod that produces thick, heavy vapor and the taste experience that comes with ceramic coils making it, dare we say it, one of the best systems available for new users. The ‘Attack Penguin’ vanquishes most basic mods (as well as a few advanced mods) with its massive tank, clean refilling and superb vaping performance. The only disadvantage is the lack of airflow control which makes MTL vaping hard. The Atopack Penguin’s unique set of features and vaping performance comes at a very affordable price, and we have no hesitation in recommending it.
